Weathering the Storms of Life

Weathering the Storms of Life

You don’t have to do it alone.

With Hurricane Matthew approaching the Florida coast, it reminded me of the times I have weathered storms in my life. I survived Hurricane Andrew and learned many important things from that experience. I learned that it’s all “just stuff”. Stuff can be replaced but your life and family cannot. I learned that the power of prayer is huge. And, I learned that overcoming obstacles placed in your path can be done with the right tools.

Isn’t it the same with other storms in our life? Something happens and we feel frustration, anxiety, anger or depression. These “storms” stir things inside us that we wish would just go away. How do you deal with these feelings? Do you know that God is waiting for you to hand him your problems, frustrations, anxiety, anger and depression?

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

The key is to learn to give your worries to God, and entrust your life and your future into His hands. If God didn’t love us or care what happens to us, we’d have reason to worry and be anxious about the future. But He does love us, and He does care what happens to us.

When we give something to God, it feels wonderful because we are essentially giving the burden, worries, and cares of that thing over to Him.

The problem lies however, when we ‘take back’ that thing we gave to Him in the first place. Whether it is taking back control of something we surrendered to Him, trying to take care of ourselves in an area, or trying to figure out our own way – when we initially asked for His direction…All of these things will cause us to take back the very thing that we gave to God.

When you give something to God, and then take it back, you are taking on more than you can handle, because you were never meant to do everything alone. You do your part, and give God what he already promised to take care of, and you will be able to manage your part with ease knowing that He is taking care of the rest.

Every time we start to feel burdened, anxious, or overwhelmed by something in our lives, it is essentially because we haven’t ‘given’ it over to Him in the first place, or if we have, we have tried to take it back into our control. This action will always lead us to feelings of heaviness, because He never designed us to take on what He has promised to care for.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6
